- Choose the right washing mode
- Pick the right detergent
- Dry it properly to avoid shrinkage
- The steam press finish (bonus)
Your djellaba is more than just a garment — it’s a statement piece crafted from carefully selected fabrics. Whether you’ve invested in a premium sousdi, a soft wool blend, or a lightweight lelin, proper care will keep it looking and feeling its best for years to come.
We put together this quick guide based on our own testing and experience. Follow these four steps and your djellaba will maintain its structure, color, and softness wash after wash.
Choose Your Washing Mode
When it comes to washing your djellaba, you have two options: delicate mode or normal mode. We recommend delicate for most washes — it’s gentler on the fabric and helps preserve the garment’s structure over time.
Check your washing machine’s settings before you start. Some delicate cycles run longer than 45 minutes by default — if yours does, adjust the time manually or select a shorter program.
Pick the Right Detergent
Good news: you can use any standard detergent with your djellaba. We’ve tested our garments with a range of products and they all work just fine.
That said, if you want to go the extra mile, opt for a plant-based, gentle detergent — they’re kinder to natural fibers and free from harsh chemicals.
- ✓ Any standard detergent
- ✓ Plant-based formulas
- ✓ Gentle / mild detergent
- ✗ Bleach on dark fabrics
- ✗ Optical brighteners
- ✗ Harsh chemical formulas
Dry It Properly
This is the most critical step. Improper drying is the number one cause of shrinkage and color loss in traditional garments.
The Steam Press Finish
Want your djellaba to look absolutely pristine? Take it to a dry cleaner and ask for a steam press.
Steam pressing removes wrinkles without direct contact heat — no risk of scorching or iron marks. It restores the garment’s natural drape and gives it that fresh-off-the-rack look.
This isn’t for every wash — save it for Eid, a wedding, or Jumu’ah when you want to look your absolute best.
Quick Reference
Take care of your garment and it will take care of you.
